Situated on a low-lying site by the North Sea, Redcar is a town on the coast of Yorkshire, England, 7 miles (11 km) east of Middlesbrough. The town's name comes from the Old Norse word "kjarr", meaning "marsh", combined with either the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) word rēad, meaning "red", or the OE word hrēod - "reed", the town having emerged as a fishing hamlet in the 14th century trading with the larger adjacent hamlet of Coatham.
