Remembrance Day
Darlington
A historic market town in County Durham in North East England, and it has a population of approximately 107,800 at the 2021 Census. It is one of the most important railway towns in history as the birthplace of the modern passenger railway. The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was launched on September 27, 1825, utilizing George Stephenson's steam locomotive, Locomotion No. 1, to transport passengers and goods between Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington. This revolutionized the mode of transport and marked the beginning of the world's railway network. In 2025, Darlington will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the S&DR with a series of events, including a 9-mile interactive trail, museum displays, and a recreation of the first journey. The town's proud railway heritage is also celebrated at the Darlington Railway Station, where it still acts as a major terminus on the East Coast Main Line.
